ATTITUDES OF PROSPECTIVE FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHERS TOWARDS LEARNING A SECOND FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Abstract
In this study the attitudes of foreign language teacher candidates towards second foreign language learning. The data were collected via “Attitude Scale Towards Second Foreign Language” developed by Çetin et.al. (2019) from a total of 300 teacher candidates 206 of whom were female and 94 were male attending Gazi University Gazi Faculty of Education Department of Foreign Languages Education in 2018-2019 academic year Spring Semester. Survey model was used in order to describe the current situation as it is. The data analyses were conducted via SPSS package program. As the data set met the requirements for parametric test t test and one-way variance analysis (ANOVA) techniques from parametric tests were used. In addition, effect size values were calculated in order to determine the effect of independent variables on the attitudes towards learning a second foreign language. At the end of the study was observed that attitude scores of the teacher candidates differed according to gender, grade, academic success, attaching importance to learning a language, department perception and attaching importance to second foreign language activities.
