EDUCATIONAL APPROACHES TO THE PRESERVATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF ZIYANGHE OPERA IN ZIGONG CITY, SICHUAN PROVINCE, CHINA
Abstract
This study investigates educational approaches to the preservation and development of Ziyanghe Opera through an ethnomusicological perspective. A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. Fieldwork was conducted at the Zigong Sichuan Opera Art Center, schools, community cultural centers, and public performance venues. The findings reveal that the preservation and transmission of Ziyanghe Opera are supported through five major educational approaches: school-based education, community-based education, artist-led transmission, institutional and governmental support, and digital education. Schools contribute through curriculum integration and extracurricular activities, while communities provide opportunities for cultural participation and intergenerational learning. Artists play a vital role as educators and cultural transmitters through mentorship and performance training. Government agencies and cultural institutions support preservation through policies and educational initiatives. Furthermore, digital technologies and online media have expanded access to opera knowledge and performances, particularly among younger audiences. The study concludes that an integrated educational framework combining formal education, community engagement, artistic mentorship, and digital innovation is essential for ensuring the long-term sustainability and development of Ziyanghe Opera as a living cultural heritage tradition.
